Hundreds of floral-patterned umbrellas are hanging above Giralda Plaza in downtown Coral Gables, giving residents and visitors until Oct. 31 to see the free public art installation.
"Giralda in Bloom: A Floral Canopy" stretches over the 100 block of Giralda Avenue, creating a colorful display above the pedestrian plaza. The City of Coral Gables posted a reminder Oct. 9, encouraging visitors to see the installation before it comes down.
The display features umbrellas decorated with bright floral designs that cast shifting patterns of light and color across the plaza. The installation is part of the city's 2026 Giralda Sky Series, which brings temporary public art to the downtown shopping and dining district.
Portuguese artists return to Giralda Plaza
Impact Plan, the Portugal-based creative agency behind the original Umbrella Sky Project, designed the installation.
The company also created Coral Gables' 2018 umbrella display, when more than 700 colorful umbrellas transformed the plaza into the third U.S. location to host the concept, according to the Gables Gazette.
Mayor Vince Lago led the dedication ceremony Aug. 14.
"This was created by Impact Plan, the same team behind the Umbrella Sky sensation that captured everyone's attention here in 2018," Lago said at the event, according to Coral Gables Magazine.
Lago described the installation as a partnership with local retailers intended to attract visitors downtown for shopping and dining.
Second installation in 2026 art series
Giralda in Bloom is the second of two installations in the city's 2026 Giralda Sky Series.
The first, "Cielo Tejido: A Woven Sky," covered the plaza from May through July with colorful handwoven textiles created by artisan women from Etzatlán, Mexico.
The city's contract with Aver Productions for the temporary truss system supporting the overhead installations was estimated at $183,829.40 for six months, according to a Coral Gables City Commission agenda item reported by the Gables Gazette.
The amount covered the temporary support system rather than the total cost of the artwork.
Giralda Plaza became a pedestrian destination in 2017 when the city closed the block between Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Galiano Street to regular automobile traffic.
