Miami volleyball fell to UCLA 3-0 Sunday at Freeman Indoor Stadium, dropping the Hurricanes to 0-4 on the season. Asia Harvey led all players with 17 kills, but it wasn't enough.

The loss completed a doubleheader sweep, with the Bruins going 6-0 in sets against the Hurricanes across the weekend. Miami heads to Florida on Wednesday searching for its first win.

Tight sets, then a UCLA surge

All three sets were close. Miami led 22-20 in the first set before UCLA rattled off six of the final eight points to win it 26-24. The second set followed a similar script, with the Bruins pulling away late for a 25-23 win.

Miami jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set and still held a 23-22 edge before UCLA closed on three straight points, capped by back-to-back aces from libero Vivian Hickman, according to UCLA's athletics recap.

A pivotal rally earlier in that set, with UCLA leading 16-14, ended when Marianna Singletary's volley landed on Miami's side after a miscommunication between Hurricanes defenders, according to The Miami Hurricane.

Harvey leads Miami's offense

Harvey's 17 kills matched her season high. Ella Thompson added eight kills, setter Ariana Rodriguez posted 29 assists and redshirt senior libero Gaby Arroyo recorded eight digs. Miami hit .271 as a team, according to the Hurricanes athletics site.

Balanced attack fuels Bruins

UCLA (4-1) spread the offense across three hitters in double figures. Singletary finished with 11 kills on a .529 clip, while Mija Bendziute and Ava Utterback each added 10. Setter Ava Sarafa dished 40 assists.

Bendziute told the Daily Bruin the Bruins leaned on each other to handle the home crowd: "We made the huddles tighter and longer, and we were super communicative throughout the whole game."

Worst start in Gandara's tenure

The 0-4 start is the worst opening stretch of coach Jose "Keno" Gandara's tenure at Miami. The Hurricanes lost in five sets at Michigan State on Aug. 28 and fell 3-0 at Michigan on Aug. 29 before returning home for the UCLA doubleheader.
