Coral Gables Museum invites families to celebrate Día de Muertos with an altar honoring Mexican poet Octavio Paz on Saturday, Oct. 31.

The opening runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 285 Aragon Ave. The museum’s registration listing offers free RSVPs through its event page.

Poetry and remembrance

Artists Karla Kantorovich and Monica Czukerberg created the installation in collaboration with the Mexican Cultural Institute in Miami. The museum describes it as its first traditional Día de Muertos altar.

The work draws inspiration from Paz’s poem “Piedra de Sol,” or “Sunstone.” Marigolds, candles, copal incense, cut-paper decorations and symbolic offerings appear alongside clay objects, textiles, altered books and suspended pages of poetry.

The artists will give an opening presentation. Mexican food and pan de muerto tastings, live guitar music and a creative workshop are also planned. The museum welcomes visitors of all ages.

Check the museum’s event page for registration and updates before visiting.
