CalaMillor, the Spanish bakery and restaurant at the corner of SW 57th Avenue and Bird Road in South Miami, is holding a $95-per-person Wine & Jamón Fest on Thursday, Nov. 12.
The evening includes tastings of six Spanish wines, passed tapas and a live carving of Iberian ham from Cinco Jotas, according to Miami's Community Newspapers. Guests also receive a personalized engraved wine glass.
A Soul of Miami listing for the event adds that wine will come from five distributors, including Vega-Sicilia and United Cellars, and that the evening will feature live flamenco music and dancers. Reservations are required through OpenTable. CalaMillor’s OpenTable listing gives a 7 p.m. start and a $95 prepaid ticket price. Community Newspapers reported the event would run from 6 to 9 p.m.
The Nov. 12 event is the second Wine & Jamón Fest. CalaMillor posted on Facebook that the restaurant is "back for round two" after what it called "the incredible success of our first Wine Fest & Jamón in September."
Three generations, one bakery name
The 8,000-square-foot, 168-seat restaurant opened in 2023 at 4000 SW 57 Ave. Owner Alberto Garcia Perez is a third-generation baker whose grandparents, Natalio and Concepcion, opened the original CalaMillor bakery in Madrid in the 1970s. They named it for the seaside town on the island of Mallorca where Natalio learned his craft.
Garcia Perez's father-in-law, Jose, later expanded the business to five bakeries across Madrid. The family became known for ensaimadas, a brioche-like pastry rooted in Mallorcan tradition.
Garcia Perez, who grew up working in the bakeries starting at age 12, tapped CalaMillor Madrid's head chef Javier Dominguez to help build the Miami location. Dominguez had worked at two Michelin-starred Madrid restaurants, Albora and A'Barra, according to Community Newspapers. He has since become corporate executive chef and a partner in the business.
"Everything is made in-house with the highest quality ingredients," Dominguez said in the Community Newspapers profile. "Naturally, we've tweaked a few things to acknowledge we are in Miami (there is a smash burger and guava and dulce de leche pastries) but we strive to honor our Spanish roots throughout the menu."
All-day dining and weekly specials
CalaMillor operates as a bakery, full-service restaurant, gourmet market and wine bar. The menu runs from Spanish pastries at breakfast through tapas, paellas and heartier plates at dinner.
The restaurant offers 50 percent off paellas on Mondays and live music on Thursday evenings, according to Community Newspapers. Weekday happy hour runs 3 to 6 p.m.
Looking ahead, CalaMillor plans to offer Thanksgiving-to-go meals and holiday gift baskets. Orders for Roscones de Reyes, a traditional Three Kings pastry, open in December. A full holiday schedule will be posted at calamillormiami.com.
