Orchestra Miami launched its 20th-anniversary Family Fun Series on Sunday, Oct. 11, with a program celebrating Hispanic dance traditions at the Banyan Bowl in Pinecrest Gardens.

The 3 p.m. program, Flamenco y Folklórico, featured flamenco students from Armour Dance Theatre and Las Paisanas, the folklórico dance team from Young Women's Preparatory Academy, as part of the Coral Gables-based orchestra's Hispanic Heritage Month programming.

The hourlong event was designed for audiences of all ages, combining traditional dance with an opportunity for families to meet the performers.

Student dancers celebrate Hispanic traditions

Las Paisanas represents Young Women's Preparatory Academy, a Miami-Dade public magnet school serving girls in grades six through 12 in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood.

Orchestra Miami describes the group as the first folklórico dance team in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

According to the school's club directory, Las Paisanas is an audition-only troupe sponsored by Ilse Camejo and Toufik Zakharia.

The students perform traditional Latin American dances in colorful costumes at school and community events.

Armour Dance Theatre's flamenco students were scheduled to present an interactive demonstration introducing audiences to the rhythms and movements of Spanish flamenco.

The program also included complimentary juice and cookies during a post-performance opportunity for families to meet the dancers.

Pinecrest Gardens and The Kirk Foundation sponsor the series.
