Parents of young e-bike riders in Pinecrest have a new resource this weekend: a free safety class hosted by village police Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Pinecrest Municipal Center, 12645 Pinecrest Parkway.

The class is geared toward Class 2 e-bike riders younger than 16. A parent or guardian must attend with each young rider.

The session is part of a training series the department launched in early July after the Pinecrest Village Council approved a new micromobility ordinance in May 2026. The ordinance established regulations for electric bikes and scooters, including speed limits and fines, and banned e-motorcycles throughout the village, according to a Village of Pinecrest announcement published June 22.

E-bike injuries rise among young riders

åThe training comes as e-bike injuries among young people continue to increase nationwide. About 41% of emergency department visits for e-bike injuries in 2024 and 2025 involved patients ages 10 to 19, according to National Electronic Injury Surveillance System estimates reported by Axios in July 2026. E-bikes travel faster and weigh more than traditional bicycles, making them more difficult for inexperienced riders to control.

Florida law requires riders younger than 16 to wear a helmet while operating any e-bike. The state does not require a driver's license, registration or insurance for Class 1 or Class 2 e-bikes. A Class 2 e-bike is equipped with a throttle-assisted motor that stops providing power at 20 mph.

Pinecrest ordinance follows state veto

State lawmakers passed a bill this spring that would have added new statewide e-bike safety requirements, but Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed the measure in late June 2026, citing surveillance concerns. The veto leaves local ordinances, such as Pinecrest's, as the primary regulatory tool for e-bikes in many South Florida communities.
