Miami quarterback Darian Mensah sits atop the Heisman Trophy betting board at +480 heading into Friday's game at Wake Forest.
Mensah's odds shortened from +600 after Week 1 to +480 this week, according to Canes Warning. The Duke transfer has completed 41 of 45 passes through two games for a 91.1% completion rate, 653 yards, eight touchdowns and zero interceptions, according to The Miami Hurricane.
Toney climbs into the top five
He is not the only Hurricane in the conversation. Sophomore wide receiver Malachi Toney climbed into the top five at +1100, tying Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss. Toney leads the Rivals/On3 Heisman poll after posting 330 receiving yards and four touchdowns through two games, including a 234-yard, three-touchdown performance in the opener against Stanford that set a Miami single-game receiving record.
Miami's offense piles up the numbers
No. 5 Miami is averaging 702.5 yards per game and 10.0 yards per play, according to NC Football News. Mensah's passer efficiency rating of 271.7 leads the ACC. Opponents have scored zero offensive touchdowns against the Hurricanes in two games.
Cristobal praises efficient offensive outburst
"It was efficient. Really, really efficient," coach Mario Cristobal said after the 77-7 rout of Florida A&M on Sept. 10, according to Sports Illustrated. Miami piled up a program-record 856 yards in that game.
Rest of the Heisman field trails Mensah
The rest of the Heisman field trails Mensah by a wide margin. Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith sits at +700, Texas quarterback Arch Manning at +750 and Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr at +950. LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt faded from +1500 to +3300 after throwing three interceptions against Louisiana Tech.
TSN sports betting analyst Domenic Padula noted on X that Mensah's odds were as long as +5500 in January.
@Domenic_Padula: "Darian Mensah is the Heisman Trophy favourite for the second consecutive week. 41/45, 653 passing yards, 8 TD passes, 0 INTs. From as long as +5500 in January to +480. No. 5 Miami (-20.5) visits Wake Forest on Friday night."
Cristobal signaled confidence in Mensah before the season started. At his Aug. 31 press conference, per State of The U, the coach praised the quarterback's healthy offseason and called him "a guy that's capable of doing great things."
Friday's game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN from Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. Wake Forest enters at 2-0 after a 38-36 double-overtime win over Purdue, and quarterback Gio Lopez has thrown for 575 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. Miami is favored by 21 points.
After Wake Forest, Miami hosts Central Michigan before traveling to Clemson on Saturday, Oct. 3.
