Pinecrest cut the ribbon on a $1.27 million renovation of Veterans Wayside Park on Sept. 10, unveiling a new commemorative marker tied to the nation's 250th anniversary.

The Coral Gables Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) sponsored the marker, which honors the founding of the United States and the generations of Americans who fought to preserve the country's freedom. Several Pinecrest residents who belong to the chapter led the effort, and fellow DAR members attended the ceremony, the village said in a news release.

The marker is part of the DAR's national America 250 initiative, which marks the country's semiquincentennial in July 2026 with local dedications across the country. The village said the marker recognizes veterans from the Revolutionary War through the present.

$1.27 million overhaul modernizes the park

The park at 11111 Pinecrest Parkway, between SW 110th and SW 112th streets, sits along a freshwater pond described as a vital stop for migratory wildlife. Rededicated in honor of veterans in 2007, the site had offered passive green space and picnic tables.

The $1,271,946.35 project was funded by a capital allocation approved in the village's fiscal year 2024 budget. It adds a modern playground set back from U.S. 1 and buffered by a low coral wall, new lighting and a mix of natural and concrete walking paths, the Pinecrest Tribune reported.

The renovation also addresses water quality in the park's lake. The village partnered with Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden to introduce native orchids to the park's trees.

Playground contract signed; charger plan unclear

The Village Council on Sept. 16, 2025, authorized a contract with REP Services, Inc. for the playground installation. An electric vehicle charging station at the park appeared on the council's April 14 agenda, though no outcome from that discussion is available in public records.

Veterans Wayside Park is open to the public. Residents can reach the village's parks department at 305-284-0900.
