The Telegraph Quartet, whose album "Edge of the Storm" won Chamber Music America's 2026 Album of the Year, performs at the University of Miami's Newman Recital Hall on Thursday, Oct. 1.

The 7:30 p.m. concert is part of the Frost Music Live series at UM's Frost School of Music. Tickets are $15, $25 and $30, according to the university's event listing. A livestream option is also available. The venue is at 5513 San Amaro Drive on the Coral Gables campus.

Telegraph Quartet's members and Michigan residency

The Berkeley-based quartet features violinists Eric Chin and Joseph Maile, violist Pei-Ling Lin and cellist Jeremiah Shaw. The group serves as quartet-in-residence at the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre & Dance, a three-year post that began in fall 2024.

The ensemble built its reputation fast.

Formed in 2013, it won the grand prize and senior string division gold medal at the 2014 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Two years later came the Walter W. Naumburg Chamber Music Award. The group has since performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and San Francisco's Herbst Theatre.

Award-winning album explores World War II-era quartets

"Edge of the Storm," released on Azica Records in 2025, is the second installment of the quartet's 20th Century Vantage Points series. The album features Grażyna Bacewicz's String Quartet No. 4 (1951), Benjamin Britten's String Quartet No. 1 (1941) and Mieczysław Weinberg's String Quartet No. 6 (1946), all composed during or after World War II, according to Chamber Music America. It also appeared on The Boston Globe's Best Albums of 2025 list.

"With 'Edge of the Storm,' we weren't aiming to create a single linear arc, but rather a collection of experiences from across the globe shaped by the cataclysm of World War II," Chin told The Strad in August 2025.

The San Francisco Chronicle has called the ensemble "powerfully adept" with "a combination of brilliance and subtlety." The New York Times praised its playing for "elegance and pinpoint control."

Intimate 200-seat hall built for chamber music

Newman Recital Hall seats about 200 people. The hall opened in 2023 as part of the Knight Center for Music Innovation and was designed for close-range acoustics.

Tickets and livestream details are available on the university's event page. Residents can check the Frost School of Music calendar for additional concerts in the Frost Music Live series throughout the fall.
