Coral Gables Art Cinema screened Terrence Malick's 1978 masterpiece "Days of Heaven" on Sunday, Aug. 2, at noon, in a new 4K restoration at the Aragon Avenue theater.
It was a one-showing-only event. The film ran 94 minutes, and tickets cost $10 to $11.75 for non-members and $8 for cinema members.
The screening was part of the cinema's "Movies We Love!" series, curated by cinema founder Steven Krams and Books & Books owner Mitchell Kaplan. Kaplan selected "Days of Heaven" for the lineup.
The film stars Richard Gere, in his debut as a leading man, and Sam Shepard. Set on a Texas wheat farm, it follows a love triangle between a fugitive factory worker from Chicago, his girlfriend posing as his sister, and a wealthy, ailing landowner. Shot largely in natural light, the film's cinematography remains a touchstone for filmmakers nearly five decades later.
Malick took a 20-year break from directing after "Days of Heaven" before returning with "The Thin Red Line" in 1998. Miami New Times critic Douglas Markowitz, writing in a July 30 roundup of August screenings, placed the film's visual style alongside "Barry Lyndon," "Picnic at Hanging Rock," and "The Godfather" as a peer of 1970s pastoral filmmaking.
"No other film really feels like 'Days of Heaven,' a movie that's more like a dream or a faded memory," Markowitz wrote.
