Coral Gables residents can weigh in on the city's growing public art collection when the Arts Advisory Panel meets at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2.

The panel will review active projects and an August 2026 acquisition update for the Art in Public Places (AiPP) program, according to the meeting agenda. The meeting takes place in the Sister Cities Conference Room at the Coral Gables Museum and is open to the public in person and via Zoom.

How the AiPP Program Works

The AiPP program, created by city ordinance in 2007 and active since February 2010, requires private developments valued at $1 million or more to contribute to public art. The city's permanent collection now includes more than 30 works on public and private property, with pieces by KAWS, Jaume Plensa, Hank Willis Thomas and Tony Cragg, according to the city's AiPP page.

Major Artist Commissions Underway

Several high-profile projects are in progress. Works by Julio Larraz, Frank Stella, Alicja Kwade, Michele Oka Doner and Jaume Plensa are underway, along with a centennial piece by Morel Doucet titled "Secrets That the Wind Carries Away."

Panel Advances Cárdenas Sculpture and Art Week Series

In May, panel members voted 6-2 to recommend acquiring an untitled sculpture by Cuban artist Agustín Cárdenas through Latin Art Core. The Cultural Development Board then endorsed it unanimously, 7-0. In June, the panel took up a resolution approving "Intervals," a Coral Gables art series tied to Miami Art Week, with funding up to $110,000 from the city's Art Fund.

Hernan Bas' $1 Million Mobility Hub Commission Still Needs Approval

Among the larger projects in the pipeline is a $1 million commission from artist Hernan Bas for the planned Mobility Hub parking garage. The City Commission approved the commission in March, as the Gables Gazette reported, but the proposal must still pass through the Arts Advisory Panel and Cultural Development Board before returning for final approval. Arts and Culture Coordinator Catherine Cathers told commissioners in March that "Hernan Bas is a very prominent artist who is experiencing tremendous renown right now."

Who Sits on the Panel

Jill Deupi, beaux arts director and chief curator of the University of Miami's Lowe Art Museum, chairs the nine-member panel. Vice Chair Jacek Kolasinski and members Ray Corral, Nelson de Leon, Adler Guerrier, Mark Osterman, Perri Lee Roberts, Raul Valdes-Fauli and Sherry Zambrano Jackson round out the board.
