Fried chicken and mahjong tiles will share table space again on Miracle Mile when 888 Mahjong Social returns to Fuku for its next Sunday afternoon session on Aug. 2.
The event, called Fuku x Mahjong, runs from 1 to 4 p.m. at 135 Miracle Mile. Tickets start at $17.85, advance registration is required, and registered participants get 20 percent off food and beverages during the three-hour window.
The mash up was a crowd pleaser in prior runs. The July 12 session sold out, according to 888 Mahjong Social's Instagram, and earlier gatherings were held at the Coral Gables restaurant in May. The Gables Gazette reported the Aug. 2 event continues the recurring partnership between the social club and the restaurant.
After the July 12 sell-out, 888 Mahjong Social posted on Instagram:
@888mahjongsocial: "VIBES ARE ALWAYS HIGH WHEN WE RUN IT BACK AT FUKU 🀄️ Another SOLD OUT event! Tiles moving, bellies full, and everyone locked in."
The format uses Chinese mahjong played under Hong Kong-style rules. No experience is required. Instructors guide newcomers at dedicated tables while experienced players join open play. Attendees can come solo; organizers handle seating assignments so no one needs to arrive with a full table of four.
The three-hour window gives beginners time to learn tiles and basic hand structure before attempting full rounds.
The restaurant
Fuku, the fried chicken concept created by chef David Chang, opened its Coral Gables location on March 11 as its first standalone South Florida restaurant. The 2,000-square-foot spot serves brined fried chicken sandwiches on butter-toasted potato rolls ($10–$12), tenders ($9–$10) and sides ($4–$6). Regular hours are Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to midnight.
CEO Claudia Lezcano, a South Florida native, said in a May press release announcing a planned West Palm Beach location that the region "has been an exciting market for us, and the response so far has reinforced that there's a real appetite for what Fuku does." That second location, at 407 S. Rosemary Ave. in West Palm Beach, does not yet have an opening date.
The next Fuku x Mahjong sessions after Aug. 2 are scheduled for Sept. 13, Oct. 4 and Nov. 1.
